Use Your Own Money

Excuse his language and arrogance but Dame Dash shares so much insight on how to come out of the system. People have given him a lot of flake for these interviews but HE’S RIGHT.

  • Have you ever thought about owning your own business?
  • Have you ever thought of paying cash for your house?
  • Are you dependent on hedge funds?
  • Do you want others to fund your vision?

I had the option two years ago to present my reality show idea to some television executives. Prior to the meeting started I was told that I would lose all my rights and creative control although I created the content. It was beyond my understanding! But he was honest and I appreciated it. I immediately declined the opporortunity. For me it’s more important to do everything with authenticity than to get a quick check.

Use your own money and resoruces to create your brand. Don’t take loans and partners simply for money. What are your thoughts on the interviews?

Are You Ready for Entrepreneurship?

How do you know your ready to be an entrepreneur? Here are a few steps that can help you gauge if you are ready.

Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. Many decide to begin a startup only to find it was more than they bargained for, they had the wrong motivation, or perhaps their skill set wasn’t appropriate.

1. You care a lot about people’s feelings.

2. You are in it to get stinking rich.

3. You think Shark Tank is truly about helping entrepreneurs.

4. You don’t like to be challenged.

5. You believe in disruption.

6. You expect to be Mark Cuban, Steve Jobs, or Mark Zuckerberg.

7. You’d rather be sleeping.

It’s Not Okay to Quit

There are a lot of quitters in the world. In fact there are more quitters than there are finishers. Our world would be a significantly different place if we finished what we started. In no way am I suggesting I am a master finisher but I tend to finish more than your average person.

A few years ago a few friends of mine got engaged. They had a lot of trials and issues prior to their engagement yet they attempted to forge forward anyway. However; they didn’t get married because they refused to workout the issues of their hearts as they were revealed. I’ve seen a lot of people get married and unengaged due to issues of the heart. The issues of our hearts tend to look like our unfinished projects. We have a lot of excitement so we rush to finish it. A quarter of the way through the project we realize that the project or relationship isn’t as easy as we expected. It requires a deeper evaluation of our thoughts and more criticism that we can stomach.

We do not finish because we give up. When you give up you tell yourself that is alright to fail before reaching the finish line. That’s also the way we treat relationships. I don’t want to put in the work to better myself to be a better person not just for me but for another person so I give up. Que break up text. Finishing isn’t easy but it’s worth it. If we spent more time confronting those issues in our hearts that twinge at the sight of difficulty we would finish more often.

If your instincts say QUIT then QUIT! However; if it’s simply your feelings and lack of motivation continue to press forward.

People with great instincts always transform what they are given to more than what it was when presented to them! -T.D. Jakes Instinct: The Power to Unleash Your Inborn Drive

We have all been presented with the same opportunity; TIME! You have the same 365 days a year, 24 hours a day that every successful person has. The difference between them and you isn’t their connections. The difference is they don’t quit no matter how they feel. I’m not a Katy Perry fan but her documentary “Part of Me” showed her persistence and sheer motivation to move forward regardless of circumstances. When you know that you are called to a specific thing or person you don’t quit, you keep going no matter what because it is not okay to quit!

Why You Should Reflect On The Past

It’s easy to just keep going without taking a moment to stop and remember. Remembering your past allows you to keep a fresh perspective on your current situation.

Henri J.M. Nouwen stated:

By cutting off our past we paralyze our future: forgetting the evil behind us we evolve the evil in front of us.

That is often how we are in regard to starting and finishing things. We don’t remember, reflect and evaluate the past therefore we become a slave to what we once were.

In order to finish something you have to remember why you started it in the beginning. Everything starts and ends with your “why”. You know “why” you go to work everyday. If you don’t go to work you won’t get a check. That why sits in front of your face 5-6 days a week. What was your “why” for starting that last project that is unfinished?

Every week I am reminded about my why of writing, podcasting and directing. I want to inspire authentic change in the hearts of others and my own. When people tweet me about the impact that the podcast, blog or a film is having on them I remember my why. When I don’t post on time they remind me of my why by showing that they are impacted by my lack of consistency.

Everyday you have to wake up and remember why you hustle and grind. It can’t just be for money because that will come and go. Your hustle has to be for a deeper reason and that reason should always include someone else.

I encourage you today not to ignore the past but evaluate it and remember where you came from. Your past can be a great tool or a great master.
