It’s Not Okay to Quit

There are a lot of quitters in the world. In fact there are more quitters than there are finishers. Our world would be a significantly different place if we finished what we started. In no way am I suggesting I am a master finisher but I tend to finish more than your average person.

A few years ago a few friends of mine got engaged. They had a lot of trials and issues prior to their engagement yet they attempted to forge forward anyway. However; they didn’t get married because they refused to workout the issues of their hearts as they were revealed. I’ve seen a lot of people get married and unengaged due to issues of the heart. The issues of our hearts tend to look like our unfinished projects. We have a lot of excitement so we rush to finish it. A quarter of the way through the project we realize that the project or relationship isn’t as easy as we expected. It requires a deeper evaluation of our thoughts and more criticism that we can stomach.

We do not finish because we give up. When you give up you tell yourself that is alright to fail before reaching the finish line. That’s also the way we treat relationships. I don’t want to put in the work to better myself to be a better person not just for me but for another person so I give up. Que break up text. Finishing isn’t easy but it’s worth it. If we spent more time confronting those issues in our hearts that twinge at the sight of difficulty we would finish more often.

If your instincts say QUIT then QUIT! However; if it’s simply your feelings and lack of motivation continue to press forward.

People with great instincts always transform what they are given to more than what it was when presented to them! -T.D. Jakes Instinct: The Power to Unleash Your Inborn Drive

We have all been presented with the same opportunity; TIME! You have the same 365 days a year, 24 hours a day that every successful person has. The difference between them and you isn’t their connections. The difference is they don’t quit no matter how they feel. I’m not a Katy Perry fan but her documentary “Part of Me” showed her persistence and sheer motivation to move forward regardless of circumstances. When you know that you are called to a specific thing or person you don’t quit, you keep going no matter what because it is not okay to quit!

EP 10: The Persistent Entrepreneur

There is hope for the persistent entrepreneur. However; it comes with a mighty price. Entrepreneurship has become this glamorized culture fad but it is not what it seems. To be an entrepreneur means you are rarely off especially in the beginning. Your days run together. You lose sleep. You miss social engagements. You are consistently feeding all of your money into a machine that you hope works.

I’ve been on this road for years (honestly, all my life). The greatest asset that I have had as an entrepreneur is faith, hope and persistence (hustle/grind). I have faith that what I hope for will work. When I was 13-14 years old my brother Hakim gave me Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. Hill gave me hope! He used hundreds of modern day entrepreneurs and showed us the architecture for success.

Though, we have this formula for success we miss out on being successful entrepreneurs because we don’t finish what we start.

Hill states:

Lack of persistence. Most of us are good “starters” but poor “finishers” of everything we begin. Moreover, people are prone to give up at the first signs of defeat. There is no substitute for persistence. The person who makes persistence his watch-word, discovers that “Old Man Failure” finally becomes tired, and makes his departure. Failure cannot cope with persistence.

persistence |pərˈsistəns| nounfirm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition (dictionary.com)

Will you let a lack of HUSTLE stop you from completing what you ventured out to complete. It’s easy to talk about doing. It’s another thing to actually do. Salute to all the finishers in the world.

Take sometime today to think of everything you finished. Then work on what you have put to the side. This week I will be finishing my second book and like the first it has been a grand battle of persistence and not giving up when I’ve looked at blank pages. I am no longer concerned with the page count but with the impact that will have with the words that are inside of the pages written.

Dream Again

A few months ago I gave myself permission to dream again. I had been so inwardly fustrated with doing and not seeing the results that I desired. I took sometime off from doing music videos and projects for other people besides weddings in 2013-2014 because I felt like the projects were sapping the life out of me. It wasn’t the projects that were sapping my creativity but the people I was working with. Working creatively with people can be hard. You may not always agree and people tend to slide into your role as a director. Needless to say I needed sometime to dream again.

Working with others is rewarding I absolutely love it. However, I need creative freedom as a director and writer. Taking the step back allowed me to dream again. If you have been dry in your creativity its time to re-evaluate why you are doing what you do. Are you writing and shooting for money? Are you an accountant for the pay? Why did you get into what you are into? I got into creativity because I wanted to forge CHANGE.

My husband and I watched Belle last night and I was inspired. The movie was well written, the actors, set, and cinematography were all perfect. The message of the movie was heart wrenching. What are you willing to do for change and love?

Take a moment today and dream again! The names of what I do have changed company wise. From The Uprise, Arise, Kingdom First, Colab and now Creative Thought Media but the vision remains the same. Bring change in the world of media. Will you dream with me? What’s your dream? What’s stopping you?

Do The Work You Dream Of

Many of the limitations we place on ourselves don’t actually exist. In August I was encouraged to do everything possible to get my dreams out. Don’t wait around for someone else to support your work or do what you imagine. Take this Hobbit edit the editor envisioned a different version when they saw the movie based on the book. Take the time and do the work you dream of! Don’t wait for someone else to do it or agree with it. You have your own permission to dream!

4 Ways to Kick Doubt In The Face

We read about doubt in the form of resistances a lot in the blogger world. Steven Pressfield in his book The War of Art speaks about the resistance in a lot of detail. The resistance in the form of doubt is REAL! When we think of all the things we would like to finish and accomplish in life doubt peaks it’s head out and says hello immediately. If you can overcome doubt you can overcome anything.

Doubt is a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction.

Imagine your ready to start working on your first book and you are full of conviction and in one instance the feeling of uncertainity starts to overwhelm you. One thought at a time doubt attempts to overwhelm us until she has won and we no longer believe we can accomplish what we started out to do.

Doubt can be kicked in the face! Here is how I kick doubt in the face on a daily bases:

  1. Do the work!
      1. Nothing is more gratifying than simply doing the work. Don’t worry about how good it is just do it. You can fix your mistakes later.
  2. Speak to the doubt!
      1. Currently I am using scriptures about trust and justification to overwhelm my doubt. The more I speak to the doubt the less control it has over me.
  3. Get Around Likeminded People
      1. I attend networking events and inspirational talks each month. The speaker may not be in my field but the simple fact they are Starting and Finishing there dreams encourages me and reminds me it’s possible.
  4. Listen to Podcast
      1. Shameless plug: From Start to Finish is my new podcast. Each week I interview a new finisher. I ask them questions related to the fulfillment of there dreams. Podcast such as Dale Partridge, Jeff Goins and Michael Hyatt are great kicks in the butt that the vision is a reality.

Whatever you do with doubt you must overcome it. The sure fire way for doubt to win is to do nothing. What are you going to do with your doubt?
